Creating a channel

Chairs can create a channel from /channels/new — pick a template, then set the channel's scope (conference-wide or program), type (public or private), who can post, and which roles are auto-added.

Purpose

New channels are created from a short two-step flow at /channels/new: choose a starting template, then review and create with the details filled in. Creating channels is reserved for chairs; everyone else takes part in the channels they're added to.

Who can create channels

Channel creation is for chairs

Creating channels is limited to General Chairs, PC Chairs, Web Chairs, and Session Chairs, per conference. If you open the create flow without one of those roles, you'll see a "You can't create channels here" message and a link back to the workspace — ask a General Chair to create the channel or grant you the role. You can also reach this flow from the Communications → Channels tab in your console.

Walkthrough

  1. 1

Open /channels/new (or Create channel from the Channels sidebar or your console's Communications tab). If you belong to several conferences, confirm the Creating in conference is the right one.

  2. 2

Pick a template. Choose a template card to pre-fill sensible settings for a common purpose, or choose Custom / Blank to start from scratch, then continue to the next step.

  3. 3

Name it. Give the channel a slug and a display name, and an optional description.

  4. 4

Set the scope. Choose Conference-wide or Program-scoped (and pick the program). This controls who the channel belongs to.

  5. 5

Set the type and posting rule. Choose Public (anyone in scope can join) or Private (invite-only), and set Who can postEveryone, Managers only, or Specific roles.

  6. 6

Auto-add by role (optional). Pick the conference roles whose holders should join automatically, then Create channel.

Tips

Start from a template

Templates pre-fill the type, scope, posting rule, and auto-add roles for common needs (committee discussion, author support, and so on), so you usually only need to confirm a name. Reach for Custom / Blank only when nothing fits.

Conference-wide vs. private

Make a channel conference-wide and public when everyone should be able to find and join it. Use a private channel for committee-only or sensitive coordination — only invited members can see it.
